This book was just awful. Dee was so annoying nf filled with contradictions. She doesn't want a relationship with Beck cause of her insecurities but gets so jealous when he's flirting with another girl. Then she blames him for hurting her. When they finally get into a relationship, she gets scared after her friend Izzy and ex husband have an incident. It has nothing to do with her. Also I was sick of haring about Izzy and Axel who are in the first book of the series. They already told their story why do we have to revisit them. This book just kept getting worse. Axel, Cage or Beck- ???—that is the question!!!! I can’t decide Harper Sloan you have put me in quite a predicament!!! Oh where to begin with all the alpha hotness that is this Beck?? Denise Roberts is Izzy’s best friend- carefree and full of life or so it seems. She lives her life behind a false smile, a façade so well in place that even those closest to her have no idea and every day she sinks deeper into a profound despair.
John Beckett is oh so hot, hot, hot but so much more. Underneath this alpha is a heart of gold, a man who knows what he wants and how to get it; someone who fights for and fiercely protects those he loves (as all the corps security alphas do).
When Dee and Beck meet, the spark is instant and there is no denying what they both want. Dee wants a no strings attached fling, but her resolve to keep it strictly physical cracks each time she is with Beck. Man Beck and Dee were a force of nature together – they scorched up the pages!!!
Beck makes it his mission to break down Dee’s carefully constructed walls and boy does this man have the patience of a saint- Dee does not make this easy. In Axel, we see the instant attraction between Dee and Beck and we get bits and pieces of their relationship in Cage- its obvious trouble is brewing. Dee has not lived an easy life beginning with her parent’s physical and psychological abuse, failed relationships and the immense guilt she carries for her role in bringing Brandon into Izzy’s life. To the outsider it seems Dee and Beck are playing games- will they or won’t they? But so much pain and sorrow exist in Dee that she cannot bring herself to allow Beck in. I understood Dee’s crippling fear and reluctance as her life was far from easy and that is an understatement.
The story begins with Dee and Beck’s initial meeting and how the events in Axel affected their new relationship. Dee sees a glimmer of hope that Beck is all that he seems, but as soon as the spark is there it’s extinguished. This story deals with many sensitive issues, issues that are common to many- depression, PTSD and suicidal thoughts. Beck stood by Dee’s side even as she pushed him away. Beck is all that you could want in a man, but Dee could not let go of the past.

Their story is a harrowing one as both deal not only with their feelings, but from an outside danger that threatens their very existence. The story is filled with tense, agonizing moments that are heart wrenching. I won’t spoil the story, but bad things happen---- totally didn't see that coming and new characters are introduced. Locke is a character that I have loved since Axel and in Beck we learn more about him as he bonds with Dee. I cannot wait to read Locke’s story. This is a series I love- Axel and Cage are both great reads, but Beck is perfection. You can see the evolution of Harper Sloan’s writing- how she manages to convey such emotion and genuineness through her words. I loved Dee and Beck’s story and hope that many others read this wonderful series.
John Beckett is my hero!!! I can’t even put into words how much I love him. Beck will now & forever hold a special place in my heart. I am officially Team Beck all the way!!!
If you think you know the story of Dee and Beck, you are so so wrong. We were given small glimpses but now it's time for the real story. To truly understand this couple we have to go back to the beginning to their first meeting in Axel & Izzy’s story. We also get to experience other key scenes in the two prior books that are beneficial to understanding that not everything is what it seems.
Beck is fighting a battle that seems to have no end in sight. He is trying to climb walls, kick down bricks, and be a shield for the woman he loves. Dee is wearing a mask that has been slowly killing her for years. Just when she thinks it is time to embrace the love that is being offered to her, something always seems to happen and the mask returns. But what happens when that mask starts to fall, she accepts Beck as her shield, and she begins to fight? My answer is we, the fans of this series, get a book that is a beautiful and emotional combination of true love, self-discovery & acceptance, suspense, and tragedy.
Ok it has to be said once again I find Cage to be a huge huge douchebag!!!! While I still love him and always will, when Beck finally lets him have it & puts him and the others in their places I for one did a happy dance, fist raise, and high-five by kindle. When everything was revealed, I was so glad that Izzy was a great friend and did what a great friend should do. In the end, it made their relationship that much stronger. I had a harder time forgiving Cage because I feel like he should have seen though Dee’s mask so much sooner and tried to protect her like he always tried to do with Izzy.
And now he comes the hard part chapters 26-28 will just break your heart. If you are like me and are binge reading the box set, you are fresh off the death of Melissa’s mom & kidnapping of our Cohen so this will literally have you crying like a newborn baby. And I can’t talk about what Sway did without feeling a sharp pain in my chest and becoming tearful.
This is a story that sticks with you. For any of us who know what it feels like to wear a mask but want & need someone to just look a little closer this is the story gives us hope. And maybe we will be lucky to have our own Beck.
