21216588I am so glad I read this! I love Elaine Spires as much as her work! The first few chapters of this book were a little emotional. So I am not going to give away the plot but it starts with a visit to have an abortion. WOW Heavy topic!
This book was descriptive and set in England and Antigua. The main character, Eleanor, is a well-known artist. Eleanor's daughter Victoria is her personal assistant. The thought of being my Mothers PA is hysterical to me. The story starts with the two planning on a winter in Antigua which will be before Eleanor's latest exhibit. Here the author has a wonderful way of sharing the scenery and local foods in a way that makes you want to visit. She should make a travel brochure.
Enter Tyrone, a local very chilled out beach bum. The description of Antigua and the surrounding were spot on! I liked Tyrone a lot. The part where the author take a situation that is serious and makes it sort of funny. For example Tyrone is late to the clinic and the two ladies are bickering about him being late. So when he gets there it is a situation where he just blurts out that his mother wants a grand children and would like that known before the abortion. I was almost laughing because it was an I Love Lucy moment to me.
A great reveal happens that sets the rest of the tone. I really have to say that when the twist happened I was was like "YES that's how you do it" Great writing. The final chapter had me shocked and speechless. A great book for sure!
